Husbandless and futureless—and no way to change either. That’s how Rose sees her life when the new horse is suddenly spooked. She is thrown and he gallops away—leaving her for dead with a life-threatening injury. Henry, hunting on Rose’s father’s land, comes across a mob of wild pigs circling a lifeless body. Recognising the woman’s blazing red hair and finding that she is still breathing, he determines to save her.
While she recovers, Henry and Rose renew their friendship. Rose is delighted, but is harbouring a dark secret; one that would surely ruin any chance of marriage should it become known. But her once-best friend-turned-enemy Molly, knows. Hoping to ensure Rose never finds happiness; she threatens to tell Henry—her brother.
Just when their relationship is blossoming, World War 1 breaks out. At first, Henry is spared from going, but when he’s given the white feather of cowardice, Henry begins to believe people think poorly of him, he must prove he is an honourable man and everything changes.
Can the future that Rose hopes for even be possible with unshared secrets? Will the belief that going to war return Henry’s honour? Will Henry’s embittered sister ensure neither is possible? Or can the cries to a merciful God bring healing to broken hearts?
